However, the first reported match involving Pontypridd was played on 18 December 1873 against Roath (Cardiff). They were represented at a meeting in Tenby in 1880 that would later lead to the formation of the Welsh Rugby Union in 1881. Pontypridd's Edward Treharne, who also played for Cowbridge Grammar School as a student, was named in the first Welsh International side in 1881.
